Tumak House Reboot
Location: Ulleung Island, South Korea
Type: Vernacular housing proposal
Material: Concrete
Year: 2018
A Tumak House is a traditional type of house on Ulleung Island located in the East Sea of Korea. Because of the island's regional weather conditions, heavy rain and snow, Tumak house has developed its unique spatial configuration. Having layered space surrounding rooms protects its inhabitants from the weather. This space has been considered as 'in-between-space.' It is a flexible space depending on the weather conditions. It can be interior or exterior, and people have used it for work and food storage.
This project researches the housing type and proposes a shared house as one solution to a shortage of housing nearby the Island. Learning from the Tumak House's space, I suggest sharing spaces between each apartment. Ultimately, the project questions how we will live together.
