Tableau of Bodies

Material: Pen on paper

Size: 18x24 in (45.7x61 cm)

Year: 2022

Depending on how one reads this piece, there are three or more abstract bodies here. The bodies are slightly apart from each other having a minute distance between them. At the same time, they make an organic shape, touching each other; arms, legs, nipples...

The check pattern inspired me. Each checker is surrounded by a checker of the opposite color. If this were an architectural plan, a white single checker would be a space, and a black checker would be a wall or column. The check pattern is solitary and a group at the same time. As if it were an architectural cross section, the check pattern provides a generous amount of empty space. So, the bodies in this drawing are not completely solid, they are an incomplete void.

The check pattern also represents a binary system. In this drawing, the bodies are covered with this system. However, each body has its own nonbinary form.

Additionally, the check pattern transitions from a traditional square shape to an organic bubble shape, fusing straight and curved lines.

Why draw this instead of rendering it on a computer? Because flaws and imperfections give the piece an intentional incompleteness.

The drawing is represented in a limited space- a space within pen lines, a space within 18x24 inch paper, a space within ones body, a space within a physical room, and lastly, within the confines of capital.
